Meet Don Slone!
Born November 12, 1943 in Perry County, Indiana, Don Slone has lived and worked in Clarksville most of his life. In 1948, his family moved to a Clarksville farm, where he grew Don’s father was a Mason and a construction superintendent. “He always taught me that anything worth doing is worth doing right and to treat people the way that you’d like to be treated,” said Don. “And that’s what we do: We sell pre-owned cars and trucks and we treat every customer just the way that we’d like to be treated.” Growing up, Don attended McCulloch Elementary and Jeffersonville High School. When he graduated in 1961, Don trained as a Crash Rescue Firefighter in the U.S. Air Force until 1964. Shortly thereafter, Don worked at The Louisville Courier Journal and at WHAS11. He made his debut into the car sales business in 1966 when he was approached by the Sam Swope Pontiac Organization and asked to become their Finance and Insurance (F&I) Manager at the Shelbyville Road location. By the mid-1960s, F&I departments were starting to become a necessary feature in automobile dealerships. So, he went to Chicago to train for the Sam Swope position and in November of 1966, Don became the first F&I manager in the state of Kentucky. Don’s career took off quickly. In 1970, Don was promoted to Used Car Sales Manager. In 1974, he was promoted New Vehicle Sales Manager. In 1978, he became the Vice President and General Sales Manager. Finally, in 1980, Don became a partner and opened what was initially Greentree Used Cars. He eventually went on to be awarded the Pontiac & GMC franchise for southern Indiana, along with the Buick franchise by 1991. By 2002, Don had also added the Subaru, Suzuki, and Daewoo franchises. “I had intended to retire at that time but could not make myself do it,” he said. “My love for our customers and the pre-owned part of this business has led me to stay in this business ever since. Don lives with his wife Janette and has three daughters and five grandchildren in Clarksville, Indiana. “You can probably find me just about any day at 950 E. Lewis & Clark."
